The MPRE is short compared to the bar exam — 60 multiple-choice questions in two hours — but it covers a fairly dense set of professional responsibility rules, and most law students take it alongside an already packed course load. That combination is exactly why it trips people up: the exam itself isn't long, but the material rewards precise recall of specific rules rather than general reasoning.
The exam is based on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Judicial Conduct, and questions often hinge on small distinctions — what a lawyer must do versus what a lawyer may do, or where a duty to a client ends and a duty to the court or a third party begins. Skimming the rules once usually isn't enough to hold onto those distinctions under exam pressure.
A practical way to prepare
Condensed study notes organized by rule area, paired with practice questions that mimic the exam's style of testing fine distinctions, tend to work better here than re-reading a full treatise.
